Pros and Cons of Laser Hair Removal

If you struggle with unwanted hair on your body, you probably already know the “joys” of waxing and shaving. Both can really eat up a lot of time. Not only that, but if the unwanted hair happens to be in an inconvenient area, such as on your back, you may not be able to remove it easily on your own at all. One way to get around that problem is to have laser hair removal treatment. However, as with anything else, there are pros and cons to having laser treatments. Let’s start with the pros:

Treatment Can Be Done Regardless of Hair Growth

The first nice thing about laser hair removal is that it doesn’t usually require a lot of hair growth. In other words, if you recently shaved the area you can still have a treatment done. The point of having the treatment after recently shaving would be to attack the hair at its roots, keeping it from coming back as soon.

Treatment Doesn’t Take Very Long

Even if you are having a large area treated, such as your back, laser hair removal treatments don’t take very long. Most patients are in and out in an hour or less. That’s a much faster result than if you were to have another type of treatment done, such as electrolysis.

Less Pain Than Electrolysis

Another advantage of laser hair removal treatment is that it generally causes less pain than electrolysis. However, it can be uncomfortable, and it may feel like your skin is being snapped by a rubber band or heated up to an uncomfortable temperature.

Even though laser hair removal can get rid of up to 80% of unwanted hair for a long period of time, it’s not the right procedure for everyone. Here are a few cons to consider:

Repeated Costs and Inconvenience

Laser hair removal treatments don’t last forever. You may need to have a series of five or six treatments done to get the results you want. Then you might need to have another sequence of treatments again several months later to maintain those results. Both the costs and the inconvenience of taking time out of your busy schedule can add up.

Laser Treatments Work Well for All Skin Types

Laser treatments work best on those with dark hair and light skin. However, people with other hair colors and pigmentation may be treatable by a certain type of laser designed for their skin and hair types. So, you might need to look around for a while to find a clinic that can accommodate you.

Side Effects Can Happen

A final thing to consider is that side effects from laser skin treatments can happen. Some of those side effects might include burns and blisters. Some patients even experience scarring. Those side effects are few and far between, but they do definitely exist. So, you should certainly think about them before you undergo laser treatment to remove your unwanted hair.

Now that you understand the pros and cons of laser hair removal, you can start to weigh your options. It’s true that shaving and waxing can be done at home, and they are much more convenient. However, the results of laser hair removal can be more long-lasting, saving you a lot of time and trouble. Only you can decide if the time savings and potential benefits are worth dealing with the cons of the procedure.
